Andy Warhol: A Picture Show by the Artist- The Early Work, 1942-1962 Details

From Library Journal Though a major force in contemporary art, Warhol's early work is often discounted; for prior to the advent of Pop Art Warhol worked as a commercial artist. Crone puts the early work in a new light, demonstrating that at the time influences on Warhol were not commercial but derived from caricature, folk art, the works of Shahn and Matisse, and Warhol's Carnegie professor, Robert Lepper. Crone also connects Warhol's development with the literary and sociopolitical setting of post-war America. The resulting collage of information is not always easy to follow. However, because Crone focuses on early Warhol and many heretofore unreproduced artworks, this book will be useful for both scholars and artists.Douglas G.
