Reviews

It is of immense interest to me the statement that Lord Balcarres makes early in the book that this was the first book in English about the works of Donatello. Curious this since some 450 years have passed after Donatello's life. Even if not particularly correct, it illustrates how one artist can speak to various generations or be ignored. Not to belabor the obvious but the value of the book lies today in what works were appreciated more in the past and what we value more today. It all is a matter of emphasis and perception While Donatello's Magdalene Penitent appeals to us today more that Lord Balcarres may lie in the fact that Giacometti stands in between us and the author. A book like this helps us too see with a different patina. It helps that the author does know his subject well and it is interesting to compare his scholarship to today's.
